An asset tag is a durable label or plate fixed to a piece of equipment or furniture that carries a unique number, often with a barcode or QR code, so the item can be identified, counted and tracked in an asset register. In Kenya, asset tags are used by schools, county and national government, hospitals, banks, factories, hotels and NGOs that must prove what they own and where it is.
Why organisations tag assets
- Audits. Auditors and donors expect physical assets to match the register. Tags make verification fast.
- Loss and theft control. A visible tag with your name discourages theft and helps recovery.

What goes on an asset tag
At minimum: your organisation name or logo, a unique asset number and a barcode or QR code. Many clients add the department, "Property of" wording, a phone number and, for donor-funded projects, the funder's logo.
Choosing a size
50 x 25 mm suits most furniture and ICT equipment. 60 x 30 mm and 75 x 38 mm allow larger logos or extra text. Use 100 x 50 mm for machinery and equipment plates. See our size and placement guide.
Numbering and registers
